Motives Matter

Hello friends. So, recently I decided to buy a very expensive purse. When I initially sat down to purchase a purse online, I felt the gentle nudge of Holy Spirit saying, "no". Even though I felt that gentle witness in my spirit I proceeded anyway. I tried to purchase this purse inspite of the inner wall that Holy Spirit put up, and the purchase fell through. So, I again, ignored the block And tried again. This time, I tried to purchase a different purse however, I was blocked again. By this time I'm not connecting the dots; maybe the Lord is telling me not to buy this purse. I then called customer service to attempt to make the purchase yet a third time. As I'm conversing with the very polite customer service rep on the other end of the phone line. She's trying to assist me in getting past this block that clearly the Lord was causing to get my attention. So she's searching to be able to help me find a purse that I could purchase and be satisfied with me consumer need met. I finally said "I'm sorry, thank you so much for helping me Im not going to get the purchase today. i appreciate you trying to help me." In that moment where I accepted what the Holy Spirit was saying I didn't understand why I felt the block in getting the purse but I knew that This should not be this hard. So I choose to follow the leading of Holy Spirit.

I dialogued later with Holy Spirit because I didn't understand why I couldn't get the purse… While in prayer one day Holy Spirit Said, "why did you want the purse?" You see friends, I wanted this purse after seeing someone else with it. It was not a pure desire. My desire came from the lust in my eyes. Holy Spirit said "it's not the purse that I want to draw your attention to". He explain so gently, "I want you to have every good thing. What I don't want is the wrong motive behind it. Why did you desire it in your heart?" Friends I searched my heart and I needed to be honest with myself. I realized that I wanted the purse because I saw someone else with it.

The word of God calls that heart motive covetousness. Motives Matter. A covetous person has a strong desire to possess something, especially something that belongs to another person.

I do not believe that my heart is in this posture continually however, in order to stop anything from growing in us Holy Spirit is kind to point out any roots that may attempt to grow to choke out the truth. "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbourr's (Exodus 20:17).

For us to become a true Follower of Christ we must die to self (Luke 9:23-24). "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it"? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings (Jeremiah 17:9-10).

Choosing our own way is not the characteristic of someone that follows Christ in humility. When Holy Spirit reveals the motives of our hearts we must stop our flesh from having its own way and yield to the voice of Holy Spirit who leads us and guides us into all truth.
